Seventy years ago, after more than a decade of chaos, the world finally saw an end to the deadliest and most widespread war in history, World War II.

China will commemorate both its victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) and the end of World War II on Sept 3. The events include a military parade, a reception and a gala.

Chinese analysts have high hopes that world leaders will deliver a message of peace during the holiday. But to fully understand the importance of this occasion, you may need to dive into the history behind the celebration.

In 2014, the 12th National People’s Congress designated Sept 3 as the official commemoration day for China’s victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The holiday comes one day after Sept 2, the date widely considered to be the end of World War II. On that day in 1945, Japanese representatives signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

No. The most important commemorative event in Russia–the annual military parade on Moscow’s Red Square – is held on May 9. Germany surrendered in Berlin on May 8, 1945, known as “V-E Day” (Victory in Europe Day). But it was past midnight according to Russian time, so the Soviet government didn’t announce the victory until next morning.

In Europe, the battle of Normandy beach on June 6, 1944, takes a special spot on the calendar. Known as D-Day, the Normandy landings in northwest France brought the Allied countries a significant victory, which ultimately led to Germany’s surrender.

Japan’s World War II commemoration mainly falls on Aug 6 and 9, the dates in 1945 when two Japanese cities were struck by atomic bombs. Germany commemorates the war on Jan 27. On that day in 1945, the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by Soviet troops.

According to Major General Qu Rui, the goal of the parade is to fully acknowledge China’s contribution during the war, which has long been underestimated both at home and abroad.

The war in China lasted almost 14 years – meaning that China had the longest fight against fascist forces of all the Allied nations. China lost more people than any other country, except perhaps for the former Soviet Union (which lost at least 27 million). Thanks to the Chinese people, a huge number of Japanese troops were mired in battles throughout China and were unable to attack other countries.

Qiao Liang, with the PLA National Defense University, told Xinhua News Agency that China learned a tough lesson during the war. Without a strong national defense, the country lies vulnerable to predators and cannot avoid war.

Representatives from 49 countries and 30 foreign leaders will attend. Foreign leaders include Russian President Vladimir Putin, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon.

Countries like the US worry that the parade is China’s attempt to showcase its military might and that their participation might offend Japan. The US decided to send only the ambassador from its Chinese embassy.

Ban Ki-moon’s attendance was criticized by Japan, which argued that the UN should remain neutral during the commemoration of historical events. Ban responded by saying that it is important to recognize China’s “contribution and sacrifice” in the war.

The situation is trickier for Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been meaning to repair Japan’s damaged ties with China. But critics speculate that Abe’s participation in the parade might be interpreted as him offering an apology, which is not Japan’s intention.
